Warden's Log #1

Tonight (01/04/2019) was our first session of Mothership. Unfortunately, one of the players had an emergency and was unable to make it. He communicated with me via text while the other players created characters.

The Red Sun Alpha, a planetary research vessel, is crewed by four: Pilot Elijah Dean (Teamster), Doctor McKraken (Scientist), AKT-0 (Android), and Private yet-to-be-named (Marine). They are traveling through hyperspace to their next research location when Elijah is stirred by the failsafe computer.

As the tinnitus and temporary blindness from cryosleep wear off, Elijah is greeted by red, strobing lights and blaring sirens - a power failure. He crawls out of his cryochamber and stands, dizzy and disoriented.

A silhouette is moving towards him. It’s eyes have a faint, cold glow. AKT-0 moves toward him from the doorway. Elijah sighs and heads for the cargo deck while AKT-0 recites crew policy stating that any crew members aware of damage or malfunction must alert the captain immediately. Elijah ignores her.

The computers are down, so AKT-0 has to crank open every airlock by hand. They make it to the computer room and reboot the computer. The sirens stop and the lights are restored. Logs show that there was a break in the circuit that cause the computer to fail, but upon reboot the computer rerouted the circuit. Status report also shows that one of their life support modules has been breeched and their jump drives are down.

Elijah and AKT-0 go to investigate, and they see the airlock to the life support is massively bulging from the inside, seemingly from an intense impact.

They head back to the cryochambers to wake Dr. McKraken and their marine. McKraken wakes; the marine does not. He is stable, but his cryochamber is unresponsive.

The three decide to deal with the marine later and head back down to the damaged airlock.

They discuss opening it to observe the damage and what could have caused the dent.

Impact. The airlock bulges even more with the impact of something on the other side. Impact. Impact.

They run out of the hall and close the airlock. Elijah dons his vacsuit an tells the others to wait outside the hallway. He is going to anchor himself and open the damaged airlock hoping to rocket whatever is on the other side far away.

He attaches himself to the floor with his magboots and attaches his rigging gun to a nearby pipe, tying it around his waist, and opens the airlock. The air around him rushes out of the airlock - partially open because of the catch of the bulge.

Looking over his shoulder, Elijah sees long white teeth dig in to the metal on his side of the door. Black ichory tentacles wrap over the edge, and once the air is fully drained, a death worm floats toward him like a long, toothy spine covered in black ooze floats peacefully towards him.

It suddenly lunges for his helmet wrapping its maw around the orb and gouging the glass with its teeth.

Elijah relays his need for help over their coms, draws his vibrachete and stretches to reach the airlock controls. He closes the door as the worm tightens is dread grip on his helmet and the hallway refills with oxygen. He swings the vibrachete behind his head and slices the worm in half, and spilling its black guts over the front of his helmet.

By this time, the doctor and the android are present, and McKraken goes to investigate the sundered worm, checking for signs of life. As she bends down to examine it, it makes its last gasp and flails towards her. One of its teeth catches her cheek, and it falls flaccid on the ground. AKT-0 makes pudding of the corpse via crowbar.

Elijah - still tied up in his rigging gun and magboot setup - notifies the group that the other half of the worm is moving and growing teeth.

It begins to float in the air, but McKraken makes short work of it with her tranq gun.

AKT-0 and the doctor runs scans and determine this is an undiscovered species. They speed it to one of their on-board habitat enclosures.

Problem solved.

Elijah checks the damage to the life support module. It is completely, irreparably destroyed.

The crew heads to the bridge to asses their situation. The notice they are in a massive ring of derelict ships orbiting a system of one planet and one moon. There are signs if life on the moon in two places, and the planet is emanating strange energy. Their jump drive is still non-functioning despite the reboot.

The jump drives’ data has been wiped, and they cannot bring them online. Something outside the ship’s systems is preventing them from working.

The nearest derelict ship is running on a low power cycle and emanating the same energy as the planet. After some debate, the crew decides their only hope to figure out their jump drive problem is to investigate this ship for more information or a possible functioning jump drive replacement.

They go to wake up their marine.
